Why is that little kitten pregnant?

The other day, I was out bicycling with my mom. We pulled over at the side of the road so we could exchange a gift catalog before going our separate ways home.  I glanced over into the yard we were stopped in front of and saw a kitten.  Naturally, being the adamant cat lover that I am, I had to say, "hello".  A sweet, little, short-haired, brown tabby ran over and greeted me affectionately.

After stroking her for a few moments, I decided I'd better get on my way.  But the kitten didn't want me to go. And I didn't want her to follow me into the street.  Her coat was in good shape, so I didn't think she was a stray. I went to pick her up so I could take her back into the yard I had originally found her in.  My heart sank.  Little lumps of life inside her.  Already.  In one so young.

I thought back to my visit to the humane society just a few weeks previous for an open house. I thought of the kittens and cats THERE who needed a home. The WHYS started running through my mind. The same old, sad, tired whys.  And I cried.

Later, I remembered an old saying: Light a candle or curse the darkness.

It's not about reacting to guilt.  Or getting in people's faces, making them feel guilty. Compassion.  Mercy.  Respect for life. It's about sharing those things.  And, of course, a love for cats....
